WHEELS
Bryan:
Chad Newman's and Mark Swaby's recommendations hold a great deal of
merit. In my opinion, the most effective way to muffle the ringing and
squeeling of pressed steel wheels is to jam the flange well (the "well"
being the concave groove on the inside of the wheel) with automotive
heater hose. Here's the basics (I once had specific instructions, but
I'll be darned if I can find them now): (1) determine the circumference
of your wheels at the flange wells. (2) cut a length of 5/8" (inside
diameter) heater hose just slightly longer that the circumference of
your wheel. (3) Wrap the hose around the axle and connect it's two ends
together with a 5/8" or 3/4" garden hose mender (I've used the plastic
"Green Thumb" brand available at any True Value hardware store). Then
compress the hose into the flange well. You don't need to glue it or
anything. Its want to naturally expand within the well will keep it
firmly seated in place. And believe me, it does the job it's intended
for.
