Most filter companies in thier books will have a spec section.  This will give
the specs on dia., lenght, size of threads, dia. of gaskets, and etc. The parts
person should be able to look in this section and get you a shorter filter
with all of the other specs the same. We have had to do this on heavy 
equipment because of the one the book calls for is to long and would hit the 
frame or other components.
